I want to do more! (Washtenaw)
April 7, 2008
Today was our second day of VBS. It was more productive, but still chaotic.
We decided this morning that instead of trying to have everything orderly and controlled in groups to just go with the flow and try to get one point across: Jesus Loves You!

We went inside the church and sang songs instead of being outside in the grass with a tornado of children swirling around.
It worked a lot better that way and I think Mr. Shields got the point across well.
Out of the hundreds of faces I saw today, there was a one that stuck with me. A six-year-old boy named Gowaynye attached himself to me the minute he saw me. I could not wrench his little fingers off of mine for more than a minute before he would find it again and latch on.
This kid was adorable. While most of the other kids ran around like chickens let out of their pen, this one just stuck by me hugging my leg or clasping my hand tight. His face lit up when I showed him how I could whistle with my hands. It was amazing to show him something that made him smile.
I know there are cute six-year olds in the States, but there is something about connecting with a kid from another country that sticks in your head. I want to see where he lives and meet his older sister. I wish I could experience Jamaica in real life rather than through a one and a half hour VBS.
I want to actually help these kids. Build them a better house, buy them a car, or at least visit them in their homes. I guess I should be happy for the opportunity that I do have to serve them, but at the same time, I want to do more. Maybe tomorrow.
